Minimalist Sarcastic T-Shirts: A Buyer's Guide

The difference between a sarcastic tee that looks designed and one that looks printed at a mall kiosk is almost never the joke. It's the type scale, the ink coverage and the collar.

Type scale and placement

A statement line should sit roughly between the collarbones and the sternum, occupying about a third of the chest width. Bigger reads as merch; smaller reads as a private note.

One weight, one size, sentence case or all caps — never both. Mixed weights are the most common tell of a template design.

Cotton weight

Anything under about 145 gsm will show your torso through it after a wash. Mid-weight ring-spun cotton drapes without clinging and holds a printed line flat.

Ring-spun fibres are combed before spinning, which is why the surface takes fine type without fuzzing at the letter edges.

Collar construction

Look for a ribbed, taped neckline. Untaped collars stretch into a wave within a season, and a warped collar makes even a good graphic look cheap.

Shoulder-to-shoulder tape also stops the shirt twisting on the body after tumble drying.

Fit, honestly

Classic unisex fit runs straight through the body with no taper. If you want a closer line, size down; if you want the current relaxed silhouette, size up one and let the shoulder seam drop.
