Dark Humor T-Shirts: How to Wear One Well

A dark humor tee either lands as dry and self-aware or as a man shouting at a bus stop. The difference is almost never the joke itself — it is word count, typography and colour.

Keep it under seven words

The best dark-humor lines are short enough to be read in the time someone glances at your chest. Anything longer forces people to stare, which makes both of you uncomfortable and turns a joke into a demand for attention.

Let the typography stay deadpan

Comic fonts, exclamation marks and outlined shadow type all announce "this is a joke", which kills it. Flat, small, quiet sans-serif type delivers the line straight and lets the reader do the work. That deadpan gap between plain type and dark content is the entire effect.

Colour does half the work

Know where it is wearable

Rule of thumb: if you would not say the line out loud in that room, do not wear it into that room. Most dark-humor tees are weekend, gig and travel shirts. Keep one plain or purely typographic tee in rotation for the rooms where the line would be work.

Don't punch down
